She learned the nihon buyo dance from the master Nishikawa Fukushino from the Nishikawa-ryu school in Tokyo. She says that dance is for her a place where both of her homelands meet.
Hana Umeda: My body was raised in the Polish tradition but I need to transform it into a Japanese one, natural gestures must be changed into other gestures. This way of blending Poland and Japan is extremely intimate for me. When I dance I can feel my Polish and Japanese halves battling each other as both of them want to dominate. Even though my dance retains the Japanese form it is also influenced by Polish details which make it very special.
