His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gjaco came to Poland for the first time in 1993 at the invitation of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights. During the visit, when asked how the Polish Government and citizens can support Tibet, His Holiness Dalai Lama, with no hesitation asked for help in educating the Tibetans in Poland. Polish Government addressed this request immediately and a year later first scholarships were granted for the Tibetans. Thanks to the Polish Government and to the people and organizations of good will that work for the promotion o Tibet, firts Tibetans (teacher of the Tibetan language and three students) came to the democratic Poland by the end of 1994 in order to begin education at Polish universities. That was the beginning of the history of the Tibetan community at the territory of the Republic of Poland.
Later, more and more Tibetans came to Poland, either for the higher eduaction purposes, or with their Polish partners. Currently, the Tibetan community in Poland has 25 members (13 men and 12 women). That's the largest group of Tibetans that has been recorded in the past years.
