The Union was registered in 1993 as a continuation of Związek Religijny Wyznania Mojżeszowego founded in 1946. The aim of the Union is to organize religious and cultural life for its members in Poland. The Union continues the traditions of pre-war Jewish communities. It is consisted of eight Jewish communities: in Warsaw, Wrocław, Cracow, Łódź, Szczecin, Katowice, Bielsku-Biała and Legnica.

The Union is also a member of many international organizations such as European Jewish Congress (EJC), European Jewish Communities Council.
