Mistrz Sheng-jen (Sheng-yen the Master) was born in 1931. At the age of 13 he became a monk beginning his practices in a monastery next to Shanghai. In 1961, when he was 30, he decided to continue his monk life in isolation in the mountains where he stayed for six years. Later he also studied in Tokyo. Now he lives partly in New York where he leads workshops in Czan Meditation Centre and partly in Taipei where he is the abbot of two monasteries.
He visited Warsaw in May 1997 to lead seven-day workshops.
