The place was named after the Maharaja Jam Sri Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji who helped to survive hundreds of Polish children in India during World War II when they were resettled from the Eastern Borderlands by the Soviet Union. Due to the fact that the name is difficult to pronounce and to remember, members of the District Council suggested the name “Good Maharaja Square”.

The Indian hero is also the patron saint of I Spełeczne Liceum Ogólnokształcące (1st Social Grammar School) on ul. Bednarska. He was also honoured posthumously by presenting the "Commanders Cross of the Order of the Merit of the Polish Republic” (Krzyż Komandorski Orderu Zasługi Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej).
